Smile Child took an encouraging step towards achieving its objectives when on 10th June, 2010, a dental screening/check-up was conducted for school children in Malleswaram, Bangalore. The venue was the Government school campus at Malleswaram Circle, which houses two schools. The schools involved were:

# Name of School Number of students screened Age group of students
1 Govt. Urdu School 42 Classes IV to VII
2 Govt. Kannada Primary School 114 Classes I to VII

A total of 156 students were screened, and the findings recorded. The dental screening camp was conducted by Dr. Abhishek Nagaraj (Smile Child/YFS) along with his volunteers Dr. Abhik (MS Ramaiah Dental College) and Dr. Archana (MS Ramaiah Dental College). In addition to screening the kids for any dental problems, the team of dentists also gave a talk to the kids about healthy Oral hygiene habits.

The next step would be to provide treatment to these children. In this regard, Dr. Abhishek has collaborated with the Department of Community Dentistry at MS Ramaiah Dental Hospital, Mathikere. Treatment will be provided to these under-priveleged children absolutely free of cost because of the rapport Dr. Abhishek shares with M S Ramaiah Dental College and Hospital.

It may be noted that just 15 out of the 156 children screened(about 10%) presented with no significant oral pathological findings, thus warranting and highlighting the need to reach out to these children at Government schools.

Here’s hoping we can carry this forward and secure many more healthy smiles!
